To date Michael Phelps holds 16 Olympic medals to his name. The 16 is comprised of 14 gold medals and 2 bronze medals. What makes this accomplishment so great is he has twice matched the record for most medals of any kind won at a single game with 8 (4 gold / 2 bronze at Athens and 8 gold at Beijing). This count ties the 8 medals won by Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. But a record he did beat with his medal count was the most gold medals won at a single Olympic Game. With his 8 gold medals won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics he just out beat Mark Spitz’s record of 7 gold medals (also won in swimming) at the 1972 Munich Olympics. A feat not many Olympians have reached 16 Olympic medals won places him 2nd in the most career medals won at the Olympics. They also place his overall major competition medal count to 54. Including 45 gold, 7 silver, and 2 bronze.
