World Records

Michael Phelps is known throughout the world of swimming and throughout the world of sports in general for one big reason: his records.  Phelps has set an unprecedented 37 world records, beating out Olympic great Mark Spitz for his 33 world records set for swimming.  Out of the 37 records set by Phelps 29 of them were set in individual events and the other 8 were set on relay teams.  Currently 6 out of the 37 world records set still stand in his name today.  3 of them being individual and 3 of them being for relay teams.

Listed below are those records…

  • 100 meter Butterfly – 49.82

  • 200 meter Butterfly – 1:51.51

  • 400 meter Individual Medley – 4:03.84

  • 4 x 100 meter Freestyle Relay – 3:08.24

  • 4 x 200 meter Freestyle Relay – 6:58.55

  • 4 x 100 meter Medley Relay – 3:27.28

His very first record was set at the age of 15 in the 200 meter Butterfly, just 5 months after his 5th place finish at the Sydney Olympics (talk about not giving up).
